Amazon announces Kindle Fire HDX and refreshed Kindle Fire HD

Amazon has taken its Kindle Fire range of tablets to its third generation by announcing the “Kindle Fire HDX” and a refreshed version of the Kindle Fire HD at a new lower price.

Starting with the HDX you will have the usual 7-inch and 8.9-inch options both having a great spec boosts. Both models feature a quad-core 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, new higher resolution displays and 16, 33 or 64GB of storage. The new displays sound pretty awesome clocking in with a resolution of 1920×1200 and a nice 323 ppi on the 7-inch model and 2560×1600 with 339 ppi on the 8.9-inch model. The larger of the two models LSO features a new 8MP rear camera. Good news for those looking to upgrade as well as my one gripe with the previous models was how heavy it was and Amazon says that that the 8.9-inch HDX is 34% lighter than the previous model.

Good news on the software side of things as well as the new HDX tablets are running Fire OS 3.0 “Mojiti,” which brings several new features like X-Ray for Music, Prime Instant Video downloads and updates to all of the pre-installed apps. Another anouncnent by Amazon will make those who are not to tech savvy happy as they have announced the new “Mayday button” which delivers tech support 24/7 365 days a year and its also free.

Pricing is not available for the UK as yet but it looks not to bad either with the 7-inch starting at $229 for the WiFi only 16GB model with “special offers”. If you want more you can pay $40 per storage increase and $15 to remove special offers. If you are looking to get the LTE model it will set you back an extra $100. Just for those who don’t like maths the top of the range 7-inch model will set you back $424.

Now for the Kindle Fore HDX 8.9-inch model you will be looking at $369 for the 16GBWiFi only model again with “special offers”. Storage increases will set you back $50 a time and you can remove special offers for $15. Again if your looking for LTE it will set you back $100 more again making the top end model cost $594.

So as I mentioned up top the current Kindle Fire HF is also getting refreshed. The Kindle Fire HD 7-inch will now start at a new lower price of only $139 and will now feature a 1280×800 display, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, dual stereo speakers and the new Fire OS 3.0 operating system. The new iteration will also be thinner and lighter which is always good news.
