Apple and Samsung to offer wireless phone charging?

iPhone 5s and Galaxy S4 owners will be able to charge there new handsets without the need for wires, claim the folks over at DigiTimes.

Taiwan-based DigiTimes has today said that the next-generation iPhone will use wireless charging technology that Apple themselves have developed. The rumour has come from “industry sources” but they could not say whether the iPhone itself would support wireless charging or whether an attached accessory would need to be used.

Other rumours suggest that the Galaxy S4 will support the same Qi wireless charging technology that is used by most other vendors including Nokia. The S4 may have to rely on the user purchasing a separate back cover that can access the charging pad first.

We are not fully convinced that Apple will adopt wireless charging but it is likley Samsung will get on board. The reason we are unsure about Apple is that Phil Schiller was interviewed by AllThingsD last September and he himself questioned the convenience of wireless charging systems since they will still need to be plugged into a wall outlet. He also said that in contrast, the current USB cables can be plugged into computers, outlets and even on airplanes. To wrap this up he told AllThingsD “Having to create another device you have to plug into the wall is actually, for most situations, more complicated”. This makes it clear that Apple really aren’t interested in wireless charging.

DigiTimes are usually a hit and miss when it comes to getting things right so for now we will just wait and see. Would you like the S4 or 5S to feature wireless charging? Let us know your thoughts below.
