Apple announce the iPhone 5s

iPhone 5s

It is all going on at Apple’s big event and we have just seen the release of the iPhone 5C and now CEO Tim Cook has just introduced the world to the iPhone 5s. The new 5s name follows on from way back in the day when we first seen the 3Gs and then the 4s. As you would expect with the s name it isn’t a brand new device but it is an update all the same so let’s see whats changed. According to Phil Schiller, the handset is “the most forward-thinking phone we’ve ever created.” In line with all the recent leaks the iPhone 5s will launch in three different colours, the usual black and silver but also in gold.

So lets discuss the new A7 processor it’s running.  The  new 64-bit A7 processor features twice the number of transistors as its predecessor and according to Phil Schiller it clocks in at more than one billion. Not only that but he promises that the CPU and GPU are twice as fast as the iPhone 5. The new iPhone 5s also features OpenGL ES 3.0 on-board but it will still be compatible with the 32-bit apps we know and love. The 5S also features the new M& which will monitor motion data in real time with help from the onboard accelerometer, gyroscope and compass so fitness freaks will love this.

Apple is promising a big improvment on the battery life side of things as well stating that users will get a fill 10 hours of 3G talk time and LTE browsing but we will believe that when we see it. Photographers should also rejoice as the camera is getting an overhaul as well  and now features a sensor 5-percent larger than the one on the iPhone 5 as well as a five-element Apple-designed lens with a f/2.2 aperture so good quality pictures are to be had with this device. The camera also features autofocusing matrix metering so you can be sure your images will no longer be blurry unless you want them to be. Thats not all even the flash is getting some love on the iPhone 5s with Apples all new “True Tone,” which features 1,000 variations of color temperatures to help you get your images just the way you want. There are many other features that we will discuss later when it comes to taking pictures like burst mode etc but we will detail these when we get the device.

So what about this fingerprint sensor i heard all about? Well good news folks as that left field fingerprint reader is true and it is on the iPhone 5s. Apple calls this new feature Touch ID and it features a 170-micro thick sensor with a 500 ppi resolution built into the home button that will let you access your phone (Dick Tracey eat your heart out). Not only that but this feature is built directly into the operating system and will allow you to even make purchases on iTunes so parents can rejoice unless there kids know how to pull fingerprints. If you want someone else to have access to your device you can also set up multiple fingerprints so this will be handy for those who maybe share an iPad etc in the family.

So when can I buy one I here you ask? The iPhone 5s will be up for pre-order in 3 days time and start hitting Apple stores on the 20th in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore and the UK.  Don’t worry if your country isn’t listed as this list will expand to 100 more countries come December. As usual we are awaiting UK pricing but US pricing is as follows. it’ll start at $199 for the 16GB version, with 32- and 64GB models running $299 and $399.
