Google+ Photos Replaces Gallery App in latest Google PE devices

Google is moving to replace all stock Android apps with their own proprietary ones. After the demise of the stock SMS/MMS where Google replaced it with Hangouts it’s now being extended to the Gallery app. On the Sony Z Ultra and LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Editions, Google have replaced the Gallery with Google+ Photos. The Google+ version of Photos is not quite what is was shown to be during the Android 4.4 unveiling. There are several editing features missing but, Google will have these incorporated during the forthcoming updates.

As far as Google is concerned the Gallery app has reached the end of life cycle. Time to put it to rest and bring in ‘new’ G+ Photos which like Hangouts is strongly integrated into Google+.

Those who aren’t fans of Google+ and Google’s latest related antics need not worry too much. There will definitely be some developers who will package and even augment the open source Gallery app just like they did with the sms app. For now, this rather invasive change is limited to those two GPE devices.
Don’t be surprised when Google start pushing it out to all the Nexus devices. We know it’s coming it’s just a matter of when.
