Google Releasing New Chromecast With A few Minor Tweaks

It seems that the team over at Zatz Not Funny have spotted a new version of Google’s Chromecast popped up in FCC filings. Don’t get to excited tho as the documentation shows that there a no big differences in the refreshed model and features that we were hoping for like¬†5GHz WiFi support are still missing in the new H2G2-2A model. Six members of the Chromecast team also took part in a well timed AMA on Reddit yesterday and Google’s Jacky Hayward had this to say about the new model:

“we don’t have any new user-facing features planned for this device.” Whatever changes there are in the new model “it will have the same features as the original and most users won’t notice a difference.”

It’s not all dull news tho as the AMA revealed some new information we can look forward to. On top of the new “Backdrop” feature that allows users the ability to choose what info pops up on their screensaver we will see a new Chrome OS files app (Already featured in the latest developer build as of today) that will allow us to cast photos and video directly from Google Drive. The team have also said that they are “looking into” gapless playback for Google Music and are working on bringing smoother transitions to the device as well as continuing to “innovate” when it comes to HDMI-CEC.
