iPad could one day see wireless charging via Smart Cover

So it seems that Apple may infact like the idea of wireless charging after all. If a new patent application by Apple published today by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is anything to go by iPad owners could one day be able to wirelessly charge their tablets without the need for a seperate charging station. The application called “Integrated Inductive Charging In Protective Cover” describes a method of using the iPad’s Smart Cover as a wireless charger.

The cover would be made with built in inductive power coils and possibly a battery that would provide the iPad with its power. It seems to start charging up all you would have to do is close the cover over, which may power the iPad directly or recharge it’s own battery. Either way the main goal looks like it may be used as an additional battery that will keep your iPad charged up while you are out and about. Whatever it may turn out to be it seems pretty awesome to us and it will do away with the need for an additional charging accessory, which may keep Schiller happy for a while.

If you fancy a great in depth look at this then visit AppleInsider as they go into great detail on the application.
