Nokia announce Lumia 520 at MWC

At its press conference at the MWC in Barcelona Nokia unveiled their new Windows Phone model, directed at the lower end of the market.  The new Lumia 520 will be available for around £120 and from Q2.

As always with budget devices, some features have to be cut to keep the price attractive for the desired market segment.  The Lumia 520 does not have a ClearBlack screen, no flash and with a 1GHz dual core processor lacks the power of the more expensive Lumia models.

In comparison to older budget Windows Phone devices, the Lumia 520 has been equipped with 512MB RAM instead of 256MB, which makes sure that all Windows Phone 8 apps can run fine, where Skype and a number of games did not work on the its predecessor, the Lumia 510.

The Lumia 520 will come with 8GB of internal flash storage and a microSD slot with the ability to read cards of up to 64GB.  The camera has a resolution of 5 megapixel and the battery capacity will be a nice 1,950mAh.

Nokia placed an lcd with a resolution of 800×480 pixels in the new Lumia 520.  The technology behind the screen has not been mentioned but it is fair to accept it will be an ips-panel, all in all a pretty decent screen in this price class.

According to Nokia, the Lumia 520 has been designed with the same guidelines as the more expensive models and when looking at the device this is noticeable.  The front is completely covered in glass, with the Windows Phone touch buttons behind this.  Volume, camera and lock buttons are traditionally on the right hand side of the screen.

The Lumia 520 looks more expensive than it is and its bright colours make it an eye-catching device that will most likely make this a top seller in the pay & go and sim only market when it gets released in the UK later this year.
