Samsung Galaxy Note 8 – Everything We Know (Updated)

featured

As we know the Samsung Note 8 is just around the corner and is set to be announced soon. So here is everything we know so far.

Design

The styling of the Note 8 borrows heavily from this years S8, this is by no means a bad thing as the S8 is one of the best looking phones to come out this year. It retains the same curved front facia which looks amazing. The body is a little more squared off as fitting with the Note style, but its still a very attractive device. Its also is using the same screen aspect ratio as the S8, which makes the phone slimmer and easier to hold. Well from experience with the LG G6 it works well at making a large phone feel a little smaller. The Note 8 will also be utilising Samsungs ‘Infinity display’ which looks pretty stellar and reduces the bezels all around the phone.

The first (older) leak of the display is rumoured to be a first for Samsung too, coming in at 3840 x 2160 (4K). Is 4K really needed on a phone? Well not really I think a 1440p panel would have been perfect but I suppose its bound to happen sooner or later, so we may as well embrace it. Now I’m not sure if the resolution will be 4K all the time, or if Samsung has adopted a Sony style variable resolution system. If you don’t know what that is, its essentially software that changes the screens res to suit what you are doing. For example it’ll be 4K when viewing photos, but only say 1080 or 1440 for gaming. Again this is just pure speculation and again we’ll find out more at Samsungs announcement.

(UPDATE) The latest leaks now show strongly that the display will in fact be just over 1440p and not that 4K resolution as found earlier. This is a smarter move as a 4K isn’t really needed on a screen that size and its also better for battery life too. But even with a 1440p display it’ll still be plenty sharp and vibrant like Samsungs displays are known for.

Round the back to be honest is not my preferred style and I prefer how LG has implemented the dual camera and finger print scanner. This for me is not that attractive and one of the reasons why I chose the G6 over the S8. Also there people saying that the scanner placement on the S8 isn’t that great and takes some getting used to. But it looks like Samsung haven’t listened and gone with the same placement on the Note 8.

Two colour seem to be available at launch, these will be Midnight Black and Maple Gold. That is according to these leaks, but we are likely to see more at launch. I’m hoping for Coral Blue again and that was my favourite of the S8s colour options. But we’ll have to see.

You also get the included S Pen which has all the same functionality as on the previous version, but I’m sure they’ll have added extra features as after all this is the latest version. I couldn’t see any information on what those new features could be, so I guess we’ll have to be surprised at launch. Well unless they leak before that.

The specs on the Note 8 are well what you’d expect from a flagship in 2017 and it will be Samsungs most powerful to date. But the most exciting part is that this will be Samsungs first foray into dual cameras. We all know that Samsung make some of the best cameras (for phones) on the market, so it’ll be interesting to see if they have done a good job with this. I’m reserving judgement. With it being Samsung it should be good, but I guess, its one of those wait and see scenarios.

Launch date is the 23rd August 2017 at Samsungs Unpacked event and should be priced around 1000 EUROS. I have to say its got a lot to make up for after the whole issue with the previous generation, but I think Samsung will probably deliver.
