So all the rumours and leaks can finally stop Samsung has unveiled the successor of the much loved Galaxy s2 but is it worth the upgrade? Read on to find out. The Galaxy s3 will be hitting our shops in the UK at the end of May and many people have been holding out and debating whether to opt for the HTC One x or Galaxy s3 as there upgrade, after all 2 years is a long time to be tied to a contract. So here’s a run down of the specs.

Rundown – the galaxy s3 is bigger, heavier and good bit larger than its younger brother the galaxy s2 mainly due to its huge 4.8-inch screen. The measurements are as follows 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm and it weighs in at 133 grams. Samsung has also opted to go for the same plastic body style as the galaxy s2. the colour options are Marble white and Pebble Blue (Yes blue it isn’t a typo)

Screen – Samsung has followed trend when it comes to screens and realised that bigger is definitely better. They have used a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED screen which is unfortunately still pentile, but at 720 x 1280 pixels at 306ppi it will not make a difference to the normal human eye and is every bit as good as the Retina display. A nice touch is the new reinforced Gorilla glass 2 that protects your lovely display when you have that OMG moment.

Powerhouse – The galaxy s3 is powered by the new quad-core Exynos 4212 1.4 GHz processor which is flawless.Speed and smoothness perfectly combined to offer a great user experience. Also included is the usual 1GB of RAM which has disappointed a few people as most where hoping to see this increased to 2GB.

Storage – The galaxy s3 is coming in 3 different storage options unlike the gs2. The options will be 16,32 and 64GB with the option of expanding with a micro SD card. This is a great move by Samsung as HTC have been greatly criticised for leaving an SD slot out of there new One series Phones making them very limited. On top of all these storage option you get a little bonus of 50GB  of dropbox free for 2 years.

Camera – The camera is pretty much identical to the galaxy s2 camera 8MP with full 1080p HD video recording with a 1.9MP front facing camera. So no need to get into detail here.

Software – The GS3 is running ICS 4.0.4 unsurprisingly with Samsung’s Touchwiz over the top. It looks like Samsung haven’t listened to the plea to try make touchwiz a little lighter as it always feels a bit cluttered. But with unlocked boot-loader one can hardly complain.

New Features – Samsung have definitely delivered a load of new features with the galaxy s3 which are all designed to make the most of it’s Near Field Communication (NFC) and voice and face recognition technology.

The s3 puts the smart in smart-phone. The new technology is able to tell when you are staring at the phone and ensures it never sleeps while you do so which is an awesome feature if you ask me.

One of Samsung’s big selling points is its new voice assistant S-Voice. S-Voice is like SIRI on steroids it pretty much does everything you can think of it even passes the ” How much wood can a woodchuck chuck” test. This feature is what a lot of people have been waiting for and I’m sure a lot of fun will be had.

A few other features include “Direct call” which lets you call a contact even when in the middle of texting just by holding the phone to your ear. S beam service allows you to share music, videos and contacts using NFC it builds on Basic Android Beam technology and Samsung claim its a lot faster quoting it can “send 1GB Movies in 3 minutes”.

Overall the new Samsung Galaxy s3 is a lovely handset. Great to hold and wonderful to use as its not only fast but smooth smootb aswell. Looks wise it seems a bit old school but thats what makes this the perfect handset. Some may not like the plastic body but we think it makes it special.

I will be posting a full hands on video and Galaxy s3 v HTC One X comparison so stay tuned.
