We all know of the legendary war that went on with Betamax vs VHS. And that that case although Betamax was the better format it lost out to the cheaper VHS format.

Well now we have another fight brewing if not to the same level, between PMA (Power Matters Alliance) and Qi (Open Wireless Consortium) set up by the likes of Sanyo, Philips and Logitech, which currently has over 130 members.
PMA have now signed up Samsung, HTC, Huawei and LG to their members list already consisting of Starbucks and USA network AT&T. According to a Crave report PMA asked Samsung, HTC and LG to build Powermat ready devices. There is a trial at area Starbucks locations in Boston right now for wireless charging stations, but considering a wider roll-out is exciting.

PMA’s big rival Qi boasts Nokia and Google among its backers. And it was believed it would become the industry standard after providing charging solutions to both the Lumia and Nexus phones.

Now news from Samsung appears to be that the Galaxy S4 will be the last model to be compatible with Qi.

As Crave points out, now that the PMA has three of the biggest Android manufacturers on board with its wireless charging standard, a lot of folks will wait for the outcome of the format war before going all in on one standard. Rings a bell with VHS and Betamax?
