Sony rumoured to release a high-end camera attachment for smartphones

If this rumour turns out to be true (and it does look reliable), this is a bold but not unsurprising move from Sony. Apparently, Sony is tired of trying to attract customers to its smartphones with impressive camera specs and quality, but I’m not sure this is the way to look at it. I think that Sony is just trying a different approach and is looking to release a high-end camera attachment that could be hooked onto any smartphone.
Now this could be a great move, if true, as no matter the make or model of your smartphone you could just clip on, adjust and away you go.

According to the report from SonyAlpha Rumors, Sony has developed a product that is essentially a full camera-in-a-lens system, meaning it is a high-end lens with built-in sensor, battery, and storage. The lens could or should I say can be used separately, and could transmit the images you capture to a mobile device via NFC or Wi-Fi. The report says you will be able “to see live view images on your mobile device”, which seems to indicate that your mobile device will act as alive viewfinder.

The report says the first release will essentially be 1″ 20.2MP Exmor R sensor and f/1.8 Zeiss lens that you would find in the Sony DSC-RX100M II camera. The second model will have a smaller sensor, but longer optical zoom.

No word yet on pricing or availability.
