Vox Media, parent company of The Verge, acquires tech site ReCode

Vox Media, the parent company behind The Verge, SB Nation, and Polygon, has acquired ReCode in an all-stock deal. ReCode was formed by Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg when they left  The Wall Street Journal a little less than two years ago. Swisher and Mossberg plan on staying with ReCode after the merger.

ReCode used to be a site called AllThingsD. Even with the growth they’ve seen in the past 18 months, it wasn’t enough to keep up. “Everybody is bigger than us,” Swisher said in a phone interview. “It’s not a secret that being a smaller fish is really hard.”

ReCode has 44 full-time employees and 3 employees on contracts, and they are all expected to make the transition to Vox Media. Folks at The Verge seem very excited to be joining forces with the team at ReCode. The two sites cover much of the same arena, so it remains to be seen whether ReCode will stay on as a separate site. Vox hasn’t said anything about what the future holds for ReCode.
