Welcome ‘Facebook Home’

In a few more days, we will get to see what Facebook’s Mark Zuckerburg will announce at his “New Home on Android” event in Menlo Park, California. As we approach the April 4 event, various rumors have been popping up on what the announcement may be. So far, the most popular rumor is that Facebook will announce a new modified version of Android, which will offer deep integration into Facebook features/services. In addition, the integration will display a user’s Facebook content directly on the home screen. Hence, the ‘Facebook Home’ moniker. The fact that the announcement asks invitees to “Come see our NEW HOME on Android,” just puts more fuel on the ‘Facebook Home’ fire.

This rumor got more traction today with an APK reveal from Android Police. It looks like the social network giant will reveal a Facebook phone that is built for the HTC Myst. This handset will most likely have the following features:

  • 1GB RAM
  • 4.3” display
  • Sense Version 4.5
  • 5 Mega-pixel rear camera
  • 1.6 Mega-pixel front camera

HTC will most likely not be the only device maker to have access to Facebook’s new software. According to the rumors, Facebook will offer its modified software to other device makers, as well as other users.

We don’t know exactly what’s going to be announced on April 4, but you can definitely bet that we’ll have a home for the information as it’s released.

I am an avid enthusiast of everything mobile. I have used many different platforms, including Blackberry, Android, iOS – and yes – even WebOS. I want to use my experience with these platforms, and my background in engineering, to give my thoughts on the functionality of current mobile technology and its impact on the industry. I hope to foster discussion on these topics, and I am looking forward to hearing from all of you.
