Google Pixel 2 Set To Launch October 5th

According to a tweet by Evan Blass (@evleaks on Twitter) the upcoming Google Pixel 2 is set to launch on October the 5th.

The Tweet also mentions the use of Qualcomms latest generation SoC which will be the Snapdragon 836, this will put it ahead of competitors devices such as the Note 8 which will be using the 835.

As for the rest of the Pixels specifications, its a bit up in the air. Some sources say it has one set of specifications while others state that it has completely different hardware. So at the moment its hard to tell what the Pixel 2 will actually be like. The most likely I’ve seen are from which state that the Pixel 2 will the following specifications.

5.0 Inch AMOLED display which is 1440p. It doesn’t state whether its going to be using the more standard 16:9 or the newer 18:9 aspect ratio. Its hard to tell at this point as some renders show the phone to have the 18:9, whereas some other showcase it with a 16:9 and front facing speakers. To be honest I really do like front facing speakers, but I have grown quite fond of the 18:9 aspect ratio on my G6, so I’m torn between which I’d prefer. I do know the 18:9 variant looks more aesthetically pleasing though.

The pixel 2 is also going to be using a Snapdragon 836 paired with the latest Adreno GPU. Its apparently also set to be using either 4GB or 6GB RAM and 64GB native storage. The site states that the Pixel 2 will also be using Android 7.1, but with the recent rollout of Android 8.0 Oreo, its more than likely that’s what the Pixel 2 will ship with.

As for cameras it looks like Google will be sticking to its guns and using a single lens rather than the dual that is becoming increasingly more popular. The rear camera is likely to be 13MP and feature EIS again. The rear camera will feature a 1/2.3″ sensor with a 1.55µm pixel size. It’ll also likely feature a dual tone flash, HDR and 4K recording. The front camera is looking like it will be 8MP and be 1/3.2″ and have 1.4µm pixel size. According to the specs it will only record up to 1080p, no word on if it will feature EIS though. If these ring true it could be another great camera from Google as the Pixel was really impressive in the camera department. But if it only has one sensor, will that put it at a disadvantage over the competition?

camerasAs for the rest of the specifications it will in theory have a 3000mAh non-removable battery, rear mounted finger print scanner, USB Type-C and the usual host of features found on modern smartphones. The rumours also suggest that the 3.5mm won’t be making an appearance this time round. Its sad as the 3.5mm is still a popular way for us to consume music, so hopefully this rumour won’t pan out and it will in fact feature one. But don’t quote me on that, its just what I’d like.

There are a few things that do look quite certain and that is the rear portion of the phone. Its set to be a two tone design with a glass section at the top. This time they will tone it down a little and the glass won’t be as prominent, but its a feature that sets the Pixel apart. Whether you love it or hate it, it looks set to make a return.

It also looks like there is set to be four colour options at launch. The 1st being Quite Black, the second being Very Silver, the third is Really Blue and the final colour option is Abundantly Red. So you’ll be able to pick the one that suits you best.

But again all these specifications are just pure speculation at this point and nothing has been confirmed by Google as of yet. So the likely hood is that these may change over time.

So its hard to tell whether this phone is going to be the best phone of the year and its in for tough competition from the Note 8, LG V30 and iPhone 8. But I’m sure that Google will only make better what was so great about the Pixel, but again its facing a tough battle this year.
