[Guide] – Using FTP through File Managers

Android file managers are great apps in letting you managing your files and even saving them to a Cloud app like Box, DropBox StoAmigo Google Drive and SkyDrive. You can see our review of StoAmigo here

For this guide I’m going to use Solid Explorer, (SE) this is the 14 day Trial version but for £1.26 you can have the full version. The reason is, I use SE all the time, and it does everything I need very well. For a free file explorer you could try Ultra Explorer for both Android (XDA-Developers) Download here direct and Windows Desktop. (If you download it, Please, visit the XDA thread on the Android link and click the thanks button.)

Using FTP through file managers is not as daunting as it once was even going back a couple of years or so. Developers have made great strides in user friendly UI’s in file manager apps.

SE supports the FTP (File Transfer Protocol), SFTP ( Secure File Transfer Protocol) and SMB (Server Message Block)  protocols. When you log in with one of these, the settings are automatically stored as a bookmark. You may choose to encrypt your password with a global password which you should set.

If you own a cloud storage account such as those above you can browse all your file online just like you would with your browser files on your device or on a PC.

Without going too far into FTP, watch the video below which shows you How to Turn your Android Smartphone or Honeycomb Tablet into a FTP server which is 12:16 mins long. Although it demonstrates it working on a Xoom tablet the process is exactly the same for any android device

If you don’t have cloud storage you can find out all about in out beginners section here
